Boston, MA – 25 March 2011 – Northern Illinois Hydropower LLC (“NIH”) and Mavel Americas, Inc. (“Mavel”) announced the signing of supply contracts for turbines and related technology for the proposed Brandon Road and Dresden Island Hydroelectric Power projects (“Brandon Road HPP” and “Dresden Island HPP”). Both projects are located on Army Corp of Engineering Lock and Dam sites near Jolliet, Illinois and will utilize Mavel’s low head Kaplan technology.
The Brandon Road HPP is located on the Des Plaines River south of Jolliet, Illinois. NIH will build a new powerhouse that will utilize two Mavel Pit Turbines type KP3000K4. Mavel will also supply hydraulic design, generators, control systems and supervision for installation and commissioning. The site with discharge of 4,730 cubic feet per second and design net head of 26 feet will have total installed power of 10.2 MW.
The Dresden Island HPP is on the Illinois River near Morris, Illinois. The new powerhouse will be equipped with three Mavel Kaplan Pit turbines type KP3800K3. Net head is 16.5 feet, discharge is 10,560 cubic feet per second and total installed power will be 11.7 MW.
Construction on the projects is slated to begin this year with commissioning in 2013.
Mavel has contracted Hydro ECI of Granby, Quebec to provide the plant controls and switchgear.
Northern Illinois Hydro LLC is a partnership formed for the purpose of the development of the two sites.
